The practice of letting go exists in a continuum, within every day, every moment, every breath. Ideas of perfection, expectations, and judgments, from self, family, friends, and society, weigh heavily on the mind, the body, and spiritually or philosophically on the soul. We all feel it. We all experience it. But we don’t all practice letting go.Letting go has become an immense part of my life, especially over the past 13 years due to a variety of health concerns that have led to numerous surgeries, chronic pain, incurable conditions, many of them without clear explanation. It has been, and continues to be, a daily practice in maintaining balance and sanity within the complex realm of pain and suffering. As an artist, I’m grateful to be creative, perhaps more attuned to my vulnerabilities, and able to express and process them through creation. That is what art, and more specifically photography in its many forms, does for me: it creates balance.Art is food for the soul, offering a level of enrichment that cannot truly be found elsewhere. Letting go through art is an infinitely priceless experience that carries into my life in every moment.Chemi-Lumens, a type of photogram, can be technical, rigid, and carefully planned. However, I allow them to free me from expectations and judgments of what is “perfect” or “best.” They are wild and free, they are the sun on my face, the wind in my hair. They are joy, renewal, adventure, and memory. They hold the magic of the unknown: a recipe of knowledge, the alchemy of chemistry, light in its varied forms, and the strategies of time. They are a full spectrum of color. They are rule-breaking. They are filled with possibilities. They are experimentation, from thought to fruition, in both creation and presentation. They are one of the most powerful expressions of my Letting Go.
